Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW)

This guide was first created to complement a public art exhibit on display in front of Randall Library at UNCW from April 27 - May 6, 2021. The REDress Project, by Jaime Black, was created in 2011 at the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada, and has been displayed in many locations since then. This guide contains links to resources in Randall Library and beyond about indigenous women, particularly focused on the issue of the thousands of missing and murdered Aboriginal, Native American, and Alaska Native women.

Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW)
Historically, Indigenous women's experiences of violence have been overlooked or dismissed, perpetuating a cycle of injustice and erasure. UNCW participates in the Red Dress Project, which provides a platform for collective mourning and advocacy, empowering individuals to speak out against gender-based violence and demand meaningful change. The Red Dress Project reclaims space and visibility for Indigenous women and girls and seeks to foster healing and solidarity.
